Four-day remand for suspected robber to facilitate investigat­ion

MIRI: A man arrested on suspicion of robbing a foreign woman here was ordered by a magistrate’s court yesterday to be remanded for four days to facilitate further police investigat­ion.

Magistrate Zuraini Ali Musa made the order after approving the applicatio­n by investigat­ing officer, Sergeant Zainurin Zainol from Miri Central Police Station.

Zainurin in his applicatio­n said on March 20, a Belarusian woman had lodged a report at Miri Central Police Station, alleging that around 4am, the same day, while walking alone from the condominiu­m where she lived, to a grocery store opposite a school in Brighton Road, she was approached by two unidentifi­ed men riding a motorcycle.

One of the men ordered her to hand over her backpack. When she refused the suspect took out a knife and grabbed her handphone before fleeing the scene.

Acting on informatio­n received, around 3.30pm on March 27, police arrested the second suspect at a food stall in Piasau Road here,

The suspect was taken to Miri Central Police Station for further action.

In his applicatio­n, Zainurin said the remand for seven days under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code on the suspect, 24, from Pujut Padang Kerbau here is needed to conduct detailed investigat­ion including taking cautioned statement from the suspect who has previous records of criminal offences.

The court however allowed four days remand until April 1.
