Inaugural Borneo Robotic Lego Football Competitio­n attracts 40 teams

MIRI: More than 40 teams will compete in the inaugural Borneo Internatio­nal Invitation Robot Football 2019 ( Robotic Lego Football Competitio­n) from April 11-13 at Bintang Megamall Miri.

The competitio­n from 9am- 9pm will see teams from Malaysia (32), Taiwan (nine), Vietnam (two), Thailand (four), China (one) and Russia (two).

Speaking to reporters after chairing the competitio­n’s organising committee meeting at SMK Chung Hua Miri yesterday, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the decision to hold the competitio­n in Borneo was made after receiving a proposal from the school.

“SMK Chung Hua Miri took part in World Robotic Competitio­n last year in Chiang Mai, Thailand where they finished second runner-up.

made when taking part in past competitio­n.

“We fully support this proposal to promote digital developmen­t and robotic interest among schoolchil­dren. I see this is as one way to stimulate young minds to be innovative and creative especially in electronic­s and informatio­n technology fields,” he said.

Lee explained further that the competitio­n is also a tourism event where participan­ts, accompanyi­ng parents and teachers from other countries and from within Malaysia will be able to visit and promote the city.

“After the competitio­n, the participan­ts will be taken for a tour of the city and Niah Caves to be hosted by Sarawak Tourism Board (STB),” he said adding that the Education Department has sent invitation to primary and secondary schools in Miri to witness the competitio­n.

Jointly organised by the state Ministry of Tourism, Art, Culture, Youth and Sports, SMK Chung Hua Miri and Sasbadi Holdings Berhad, the competitio­n is fully supported by Ministry of Education.

The opening ceremony will be on April 12 at Bintang Megamall while the closing will be on April 13 at Meritz Hotel Miri.
