More than 250 villagers to enjoy clean water from tube well project

KUCHING: More than 250 people from several villages in Pantu, Sri Aman will enjoy clean water, thanks to Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia’s ( Yadim) Water For Life 1.0 programme which aimed to uncover water sources.

Built at a cost of RM15,000, a tube well project is able to supply continuous and ready supply of clean natural water ( almost equivalent to mineral water) to more than 250 people, said Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan in a press statement here yesterday.

Snowdan who is also Balai Ringin assemblyma­n said: “The tube well project (in Pantu area) was undertaken by Yadim in collaborat­ion with Yayasan Amal Malaysia to help uncover water sources by drilling 35 feet below the earth after a 10time drill trials at different locations.

“The project success.”

He said this when officiatin­g at the handover ceremony of Water For Life 1.0 project at Kampung Gayau Islam near Pantu, a suburb in Sri Aman last Tuesday.

Snowdan who is also Parti Rakyat Sarawak ( PRS) Youth here is a chief commended the project initiators for doing a good job.

He hoped to see more organisati­ons apart from Yadim come up with projects to help ease water woes in some other areas where water source is always an issue.

Snowdan also acknowledg­ed that the rural folk particular­ly the Ibans living far in the interior are now very receptive to modern living and convenienc­e.

“The fact that this project materialis­ed today ( Wednesday) is testament to their ever readiness to cooperate and complement the government agenda to uplift the standard of living of rural people,” he said.

On another matter, he said people in Pantu in particular live in harmony and respectful of each other’ religions, way of life and cultural practices.

“I urge everyone to safeguard this harmony,” he said adding some Ibans in his constituen­cy are Muslims.

The 14- door Kampung Gayau Islam chief TR Tibu Ampar (alias Abdul Taib Abdullah) in his welcoming speech said though they had embraced Islam, they still preserve their culture and Iban way of life as farmers.

“The residents there embraced Islam more than 10 years ago,” Tibu said.

At the same function, Snowdan pledged RM10,000 in minor rural project ( MRP) fund to the village security and developmen­t committee (JKKK) and its women bureau while Yadim presented food items to the villagers.
