Hope Place delivers aid to TB sufferer and family

KUCHING: Hope Place Kuching recently delivered basic aid to the family of former constructi­on worker Kellen Kuak, who has been unable to work since contractin­g tuberculos­is ( TB).

A statement from the nongovernm­ental organisati­on said the 40-year- old first contracted the disease in 2006 but was able to continue working until about two years ago when his health began to deteriorat­e.

Kellen, who lives with his wife and three children in a dilapidate­d wooden house at a village in Tabuan Jaya, obtains his medication from the Tanah Puteh polyclinic here.

According to his wife, Kellen is has lost a lot of weight and is too weak to do anything physical.

The family’s situation was brought to the attention of Hope Place by the Anti Tuberculos­is Associatio­n Sarawak, prompting Wan to immediatel­y arrange for a visit to deliver some basic aid.

“During the visit, I learnt that Kellen and his family have been staying at the rundown house for more than 20 years. Even their outhouse toilet is in a rundown state,” said Wan through the statement.

The Hope Place founder handed over aid in the form of rice, cooking oil, sugar, salt, biscuits, Milo and noodles to the family during his visit.

The NGO carries out aid deliveries once every three months due to the more than 190 families on its list of recipients.

Itprovides­aidtotheha­ndicapped, single mothers with school-going children, the abandoned elderly as well as those who earn less than RM500 a month.

Hope Place can be reached on 082- 505987 from 8.30am to 12pm and 2pm to 5pm ( Monday to Friday) and from 9am to 12pm on Saturdays.
