MIRI: Associations such as the Miri Hakka Association and Miri Zhang Shen Welfare Association are lauded for fostering the spirit of volunteerism among their members.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Lee Kim Shin made this commendation during a dialogue between Miri Hakka Association and Miri Zhang Shen Welfare Association here yesterday, saying members of both associations had organised a lot of activities and programmes for the community.

“The members did not receive any monetary benefit from these activities but sacrificed their own time and even money doing good for the people in the community.

“Their dedication should be an example for others especially the young people,” said Lee.

Miri Zhang Shen Welfare Association which was established more than seven decades ago focuses on helping poor families in handling funeral services for their kin.

“This is not an easy task. It requires time, energy and money and I am sure that it wasn’t something that anyone would be willing to do. I have helped countless people regardless whether they are from my constituency or not, contributing coffins as well as financial support to the hardcore poor people, thus, it is not an easy task. Therefore, the dedication of the association’s members is highly appreciated,” said Lee.

The dialogue between both associations was to understand each other’s role and responsibility and to explore possible collaboration in the future. Also present were chairman of Miri Hakka Association, Chong Ah Muk, chairman of Miri Zhang Shen Welfare Association, Chong Jun Guan and committee members from both associations.
