Bintulu youngster wants to add national colours to black belt

SIBU: Chesley Sii Chong Yu – a black-belt holder – is aiming to represent t he nat ion i n taekwondo one day.

The 17- year- old from Kelab Taekwondo Sma r t ( WTF) Bintulu certainly showed good potential when he won four gold and one bronze in the Sarawak Taekwondo (WTF) Championsh­ip which ended at SMK Methodist’s Hall here yesterday.

The tournament , which was organised by Persatuan Taekwondo Negri Sarawak ( PTNS) in collaborat­ion with Sibu Rejang Taekwodo Club ( RTC) , attracted over 700 exponents from throughout the state.

Sii, a form f ive student of SMK Kidurong Bintulu, came up top in Poomsae Individual, Poomsae Team, Sparing Feather and Sparring Open Fin while the bronze was for the Poomsae Mixed Pair.

He is determined to leave no stone unturned in his quest for further improvemen­t.

In the past two years he has taken part via invitation in a number of internatio­nal tournament­s such as obtaining a gold and silver at the 2017 China invitation­al Championsh­ip and another gold and silver at the 2018 Thailand Championsh­ip.

Sii started in the sport when he was in primary two but his training was interrupte­d three years when he fol lowed his businessma­n father to Sabah.

He resumed in form one when his family moved back to Bintulu again.

“I am interested in this selfdefenc­e martial art in order to protect me and my family as well,” he said.

He practises every day for about two hours at the club’s gym.

He is most grateful for his coaches and supportive parents who enabled him to obtain his achievemen­ts so far.
