Bako folk have more reason to celebrate this year

-

KUCHING: Kampung Bako folk will be celebrating the completion of the Bako Bridge this year with a festival to be held on June 15 and 16.

According to Zulhadi Sidek from the festival’s organising committee, the villagers are happy the bridge is finally completed.

He said although the festival is an event organised by the village every year, the festival this time is made more meaningful because of the new bridge, which would give them greater connectivity to and from the village.

Zulhadi also said the festival had always been a platform to promote products from the village, apart from bringing the villagers together.

“Many activities have been planned for the festival including boat decorating competition, boat racing competitions, local products exhibition, fishing competitions, and exhibition by various government departments and agencies,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He also said many other activities would be held at the village soon prior to the festival.

Among the organisations and agencies supporting the festival are Demak Laut PBB branch, Demak Laut DUN service centre, and Sarawak National Youth Organisation ( Saberkas) Demak Laut branch.

Meanwhile, Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Hipni said the festival was also aimed at fostering greater unity among villagers in the Bako zone of his constituency.

Construction of Bako Bridge and access to Kampung Bako is fully funded by the Sarawak government at a cost of RM41.3 million.

It was declared open in February by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
