MIRI: Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS) presented awards to 27 of its most outstanding athletes yesterday.

Among the prize recipients were nine outstanding athletes selected to represent Sarawak during the Malaysian School Sports Council ( MSSM) meet in Johor on April 21-25.

They are Lim How Sieng, Voon Wu Jung, Brendon Ting Li King, Edwin Eric Latok, Justin Lihan Lucas, Rueben Valen Samen Willie, Ruby Lee Jia Lu, Lucy Ting Hui Voon, and Jong Li Li.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the Gabungan Parti Sarawak ( GPS) government would continue to focus on sports development to make Sarawak the country’s sports powerhouse, including setting up sports excellence centres in schools.

“Riam Road Secondary School – RRSS – is one of such sports centres of excellence that has produced many outstanding athletes and sports personalities that have brought glory to Sarawak and Miri in particular,” he said when officiating at the event.

“I hope that RRSS will prioritise sports science in their sports management and training, as sports science has proven to be successfully implemented in developed countries, including in Korea and China.”

Lee, who is also school board advisor, stressed the GPS government recognises the contributions of Sarawak’s 14 Chinese independent schools.

“Apart from recognising the Unified Examination Certificate ( UEC), the Sarawak government has also increased the allocation this year to RM8 million, that is RM1 million more from RM7 million given last year to assist 14 Chinese independent schools,” he said.

School board chairman Tan Sri Law Kiu Kiong paid tribute to the GPS government for the increased allocation and recognition of UEC.

“Only Sarawak government and no other state or even the federal government recognises UEC. We in Sarawak are very lucky to have a caring Sarawak government,” he said.

He also urged parents to encourage their children to study locally instead of going overseas, citing Curtin University Malaysia and Riam Technology Institute as tertiary education options here.
