KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas on Thursday visited the collecting, processing and packaging centre (CPPC) of one of Sarawak’s largest producers of leafy vegetables, Poh Lian Vegetable Sdn Bhd at Mile 13 Kuching- Serian Road.

According to a press release, the visit was to understand the various stages involved in collecting, processing and packaging vegetables from the farm.

“The Malaysian Good Agricultural Practice (myGAP)certified company, which started its operation in 2000 produces some 4,000 kilogrammes of vegetables daily from its 28-hectare farm in Jalan Mamat Satu,” he said.

Uggah said that the success achieved by the company by taking advantage of the latest technology showed that Sarawak could move toward export-oriented production.

“It is also a model farm for hydroponic. It has a one acre farm near its CPPC using this method which our agropreneurs can certainly emulate,” he added.

Uggah who is also the Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development said his ministry is now looking at improving and enhancing facilities at its recently created CPPCs statewide.

“This will allow local farmers to sell their surplus fruits like durian, rambutan and other produce to the appointed anchor company at their respective collecting centres,” he said.

During the visit, Poh Lian managing director Ng Song Khang and his son Louis Ng briefed the visitors on the operations of its CPPC and brought them around the centre.
