Indiscriminate dumping of rubbish at cemetery an eyesore
MIRI: A member of the public has expressed disappointment with the irresponsible attitude of certain people who indiscriminately dumped their rubbish after visiting their ancestors’ grave sites during the Ching Ming Festival yesterday.
Raymond (not his real name) who joined his family to sweep his family’s ancestors’ grave sites at Riam cemetery here, had witnessed the irresponsible behaviour.
“I believe that Miri Chinese Charitable Trust Board has tried their best by preparing many rubbish bins at all the corners around the area to ensure that people would throw their rubbish at these designated places.
“Instead, I have seen several of them who chose to dump their rubbish just a few steps away from their relatives’ grave sites and worst some just dumped it by the roadside and drain. Such action not only caused pollution and trouble for the workers there, it actually put their family’s name to shame,” he said.
Yesterday, most cemeteries were crowded with people sweeping the tombs of their loved ones. Many had chosen the actual date of Ching Ming Festival to do it as it was said that the date is an auspicious one.
A week before Ching Ming, the board had announced that more rubbish bins would be made available to meet the needs of those coming to the cemetery and urged them to keep the cemetery site clean after the tomb-sweeping ritual.
Cemeteries under the board’s jurisdiction include Riam, Krokop and Lambir.
