Library’s coding workshop receives good response
MIRI: The first coding workshop conducted by the library here ( Pustaka Miri) received good response with 13 children attending the workshop yesterday.
Conducted by Teo Yuang Teck, a professional trainer, the programme was held in collaboration with Miri-based Realfun Learning Centre. Librarian Lilian Baun told reporters that the attendance was actually beyond their expectation.
“Many children wanted to participate in the workshop but due to our lack of resources such as computers and laptops we had to limit the number for our fi rst class,” she said.
The programme aims to help the younger generation be ready for 21st century skills. The workshop offered coding programme for games and activities that help students focus while having fun.
“Initially, we targeted participants aged from 10 to 12 years old, but it turned out that there were also those as young as six in the class.
“It goes to show that exposure to computers and games among children is very strong,” she said.
Meanwhile, Teo said the coding programme allowed children to learn about skills, instead of just enjoying the games.
“Undeniably, children are usually fast at picking up new and interesting things. Thus, the programme can help them develop their mind and expose them to technology,” he said.
Lilian said the workshop would be held once a month but the date for the next one had yet to be confi rmed.
“For the next class I suggest that the children bring their own laptops so that they won’t have to wait too long for their turn to use the computer at the electronic library.”
