SHS to hold talk on sustainable heritage

-

KUCHING: Sarawak Heritage Society (SHS) will host a talk on ‘Civil Society and Sustainable Heritage: Giving a Future to Your Past – Reflections on Heritage Conservation’ at the Old Courthouse here this April 11.

Guest speakers Dr Chua Ai Lin and Fauzy Ismail from Singapore Heritage Society are expected at the event, set to commence at 6pm.

The session is part of the ‘Heritage Speakers Series’ run by the SHS.

Admission is free for SHS members, while a donation of RM10 to SHS is suggested for every non-member.

Those wishing to attend the talk are encouraged to send texts via SMS or WhatsApp to +6018-9882343, or send emails to sarawakheritagesociety@gmail. com.

In her presentation, Chua is expected to discuss the roles of placemaking, the communities and civil societies in sustainable heritage conservation, taking examples from the Singapore experience.

“Placemaking is the process through which we work together to shape our public spaces, using community participation to plan, design, manage and programme the shared use of spaces,” said a SHS statement.

Fauzi, on the other hand, is expected to present an educational programme ‘Heartland Explorers: Intangible Spaces of Our Neighbourhood’ in his session.

The speakers will introduce the approach used by the Singapore Heritage Society, which combines cultural mapping research – a tool to collect and analyse cultural information from and by the community, policy recommendations, community development and sociallyengaged art that aims to improve conditions of the community.

This approach hopes to create a future for heritage in living heritage sites, where communities and continuity of traditions and practices are linked.
