Media practitioners attend 2-day workshop
KUCHING: A two-day workshop to al low Malaysian media pract it ioners to develop a common understanding of the key principles governing security operations opened yesterday.
A total of 21 media practitioners representing 17 news organisations are attending the workshop organised by Malayisan Press Institute ( MPI) and the Embassy of the United States of America in Kuala Lumpur.
“The participants are expected to have some experience with and understanding of the security cooperation in and around the region,” said MPI chairman Datuk Dr Chamil Wariya in his welcoming remark at the workshop, which is held at a leading hotel here.
Among object ives of the workshop are to develop a common understanding of the key principles to promote security cooperation within the region and to discuss existing mechanisms and initiatives for cooperation between the media, and identify good practices.
US ambassador to Malaysia, Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir, who declare opened the workshop, said the media play an instrumental role during disasters.
“The government needs the media as a partner during a disaster to disseminate information to the people on what to do and expect.”
The workshop is also part of the Pacific Partnership Exercise 2019, which is a collaboration between the Malaysian Armed Forces and the US Army on disaster response in the region.
MPI and the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur have been col laborati ng i n various workshops since 2009.
