Maxis employees raise RM30,000 for cancer society

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Maxis employees took part in the Maxis Charity Jogathon on April 6 to raise funds for and awareness of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM).

They raised over RM15,000, while the company matched the amount to bring the total contribution to RM30,000.

Maxis’ Charity Jogathon this year was held in connection with World Health Day on April 7.

Open to all Maxis employees as part of ongoing employee engagement efforts, the run required a minimum donation of RM50 for 5km, RM100 for 10km, and RM150 for 15km.

“At Maxis, unlocking the potential of our employees is not just confined to work, but equally to our MaxisWay culture and spirit of creating possibilities in giving back to the community ,” said acting head of people and organisation Tricia Lim in a press release.

“Our charity jogathon is just one of many examples of this spirit that we have instilled within the company for many years. We hope that our humble contribution to NCSM will go a long way in supporting their initiatives and programmes.”

NCSM vice-president Clare Ratnasingham said over 100,000 Malaysians live with cancer – the fourth largest cause of death in the country – at any given time.

“In Malaysia, cancer is often detected or diagnosed late, with over half of all Malaysian cancer patients diagnosed at stages three or four.

“We cannot emphasise enough how important it is to educate the public on this issue, and to promote early diagnosis and screening.

“A portion of the donations that we receive go towards such education, apart from care and support, so we are naturally grateful for this initiative that Maxis has organised,” said Ratnasingham.

Sponsor Peak Fitness conducted warm up and warm down sessions, followed by a lucky draw and cheque presentation by Maxis CEO- designate Gokhan Ogut.

NCSM is the first not-for-profit cancer organisation in Malaysia that provides education, care, and support services for people affected by cancer.

Over the last 50 years, it has provided holistic cancer support to patients and caregivers.

NCSM supports patients in understanding and dealing with cancer in various phases through its five cancer centres – the Cancer and Health Screening Clinic, Nuclear Medicine Centre, Resource and Wellness Centre, Quit Smoking Clinic, and the Children’s Home of Hope.

It has branches in Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Perak, Penang, and Sarawak.
