Negligence, lack of exposure among factors causing firearms accidents, says Police chief
LIMBANG: Negligence and lack of exposure are among factors that cause accidents while handling firearms among police and enforcement personnel.
Limbang district police chief, Superintendent Mohd Bukhori Saffai said police personnel who are highly respected by the public in upholding the nation’s sovereignty should be proficient in handling firearms.
“It is important for security personnel to be skilful in handling firearms especially when facing critical moments,” he said when launching a Shooting Competition held in conjunction with the 212th Police Day at the Limbang District Police Headquarters ( IPD) shooting range recently.
Also present were Magistrate Mohd Hafizi Abdul Halim, Limbang district officer representative, Hamidah Halpi, chairman of the Police Family Association ( Perkep) Limbang, Asiah Hasan, and other heads of government departments.
Mohd Bukhori added policemen and other law enforcers supplied with firearms should also understand and know their rights to self- defence, the life of others and property.
“It is very unfortunate if they are involved in accidents when using firearms without the permanent order of the Inspector General of Police.
“Thus I urge law enforcers entrusted with firearms to always take the necessary precautions,” he said.
On the inaugural shooting competition which involved other government departments, he said it was to increase knowledge and skill in using firearms.
The competition was divided into various categories such as VIP singles, group shootings and interdepartmental singles and special invitational categories.
Meanwhile, media practitioner from See Hua Daily News, Wong Yii Ping, emerged champion in the special invitational category, beating participants from Radio Televisyen Malaysia ( RTM) Limbang.
