Council to run ‘green’ parking coupon redemption programme

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council ( SMC) is embarking on an interestin­g green initiative, in which it is running a parking coupon redemption programme to encourage more members of the public to recycle.

According to Councillor Lai Chiong Ann, under this programme motorists can bring their recyclable items to the roofed carpark of Wisma Sanyan here this April 20 or 21 – between 9am and 5pm – where they can exchange them for parking coupons.

“The programme is part of the ‘ Love Earth Day’ campaign, of which I am the organising chairman.

“The public are encouraged to bring with them old newspapers, books or magazines, aluminium cans and plastic bottles, which they can exchange for parking coupons.

“Throughout these two days, we will assess how the public respond to the programme,” he told reporters yesterday.

Meanwhile, SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said the programme would be turned into a long- term project.

Meanwhile, Sarawak ICT Associatio­n ( SICTA) Sibu branch is co- conducting the e-waste recycling campaign, in conjunctio­n with the ‘Love Earth Day’.

SICTA Sibu chairman Wong Ing Ang said their campaign would also be taking place on the roofed carpark of Wisma Sanyan from April 19 to 21 – 9am to 5pm daily.

“We will set up a booth to collect unwanted or damaged computers, computer parts, printers and other accessorie­s from the public for recycling purposes,” Wong said.

Meanwhile, SMC will run its two- day ‘ Love Earth Day’ event on the ground floor of Wisma Sanyan here, commencing at 8am this April 20.
