Hope Place comes to the aid of former TB patient, family
KUCHING: Hope Place, a nongovernmental organisation, recently handed over assistance to 46-year- old labourer Phua Chia Huat and his family at Stapok here.
According to a press release, Phua suffered from tuberculosis ( TB) but was deemed cured of the disease after receiving treatment.
However, his health worsened as he is currently suffering from lung infection which resulted in him quitting his construction job.
His wife also had to stop selling satay full-time at the 3rd Mile after her asthma worsened. She still sells satay occasionally, especially during festive season or when there are special orders from faithful customers.
The couple has four children with the eldest currently studying at Cosmopolitan College with the help of a Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional ( PTPTN) loan.
They are presently staying in a run- down house inside a factory compound and have to sleep in the living room as their bedroom floor was damaged and has a huge hole.
Hope Place staff led by its founder Kevin Wan during a recent visit to the family handed over basic food supplies such as rice, salt, sugar, Milo, cooking oil, biscuit, dried vermicelli, noodles and eggs.
Stationeries were also donated to their children, courtesy of Sam Fah Company.
Hope Place is currently supporting more than 190 families.
