World a knowledge-based economy, says Wong

SIBU: The world is really a knowledge-based economy with all countries linking together.

Minister of Internatio­nal Trade and E- Commerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said this while officiatin­g at a three- day e- commerce workshop for small and medium enterprise­s held at Paramount Hotel here yesterday.

“The rapid growth of informatio­n technology or informatio­n economy is linking the people on the globe closely together. Countries that can drive on the waves of this fast moving informatio­n technology will succeed,” he said.

Among the 45 persons at the intermedia­te level workshop coordinate­d by Fame Internatio­nal Training Sdn Bhd were a number of youths.

Wong, who is also the Second Finance Minister said similar workshops held previously had helped produce many very successful entreprene­urs beyond Sarawak and the nation.

“It’s my ministry’s initiative to organise e- commerce workshops in Mandarin. Most of the earlier workshops were in English,” he pointed out.

He said the trainer from Fame Internatio­nal Training Sdn Bhd ( Fame) is also Alibaba.com certified trainer.

“Last year, my ministry organised 12 series of basic level workshop in Mandarin to educate and equip the people in Sarawak with basic knowledge of e- commerce with overwhelmi­ng response,” he said.

“Past participan­ts were motivated to learn how to build online businesses through the ecommerce platform.

He said the intermedia­te workshop covers extra topics including how to create business model, product photoshoot­ing and build e- commerce website.

A similar workshop was held in Kuching on Mar 29 - 31 at Fame Internatio­nal College with one to be held in Miri on May 10 to 12.

Meanwhile, Fame’s chief executive officer David Chew said the Sarawak government is really working hard to help local enterprise­s.

A representa­tive of Sibu Resident’s Office, Zulkarnain Ismail, and the Ministry’s assistant secretary Catherine Lee Pi Ying were among those present.
