Anglers club to hold Miri City Internatio­nal Deep Sea Fishing competitio­n May 2-5

MIRI: Miri Anglers Club will hold the 12th Miri City Internatio­nal Deep Sea Fishing tournament from May 2- 5 as part of Miri May Fest event.

“Apart from promoting sports fishing and Miri as tourist and sports and adventure fishing destinatio­n, the tournament also aims to create awareness on the need to preserve and conserve marine li fe,” said Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shim at a press conference here yesterday.

Participan­ts are reminded to practise compulsory catch- andrelease of protected species. Any angler found with any protected species of marlin, bill fish, sailfish, stingray and sharks regardless of types and sizes will result in disqualifi­cation of the entire participan­ts on board the same boat or vessel.

For registrati­on before or by April 20, the entry fee is RM400 per person and RM600 thereafter.

The fee excludes boat rental to ferry participan­ts to the competitio­n location in Central Luconia.

A three-member team will be charged RM100 each.

Fish must be caught using rod and reel only. Hand line and use of power- assist reels (automatic electric) reel of any kind are prohibited. Reels designed to be cranked with both hands are also not allowed.

Participan­t can win only one prize in any category. All species of ruby snapper, tuna, grouper, amberjack, wrasses, wahoo, parrot fish, snapper, sea perch, bream, jobfish, cobia, escolar, giant barracudas, garfish and Spanish mackerel are eligible for tournament prizes. Minimum weight of fish to qualify for prizes is 5kgs.

Cash prize of RM20,000 awaits the champion in the Individual Category (with biggest fish) and RM5,000 to champion in the Team Category ( biggest fish of three different species).

Cash prize of RM700 will also be given in the Fish Species Category (biggest fish in each category).
