35 teams vie for honours at Hornbill 7s

MIRI: A total of 35 teams have confirmed their participation in the Miri Division Rugby Association ( MDRA) Hornbill 7’s Tournament to be held at SMK Merbau on April 20-21.

According to MDRA chief coach Landale Cranfield, teams from Perak, Labuan, Kuching and Sibu are also in the fray.

They will compete in the Girls U18, Boys U18, Boys U15, and Boys U21 categories.

Cranfield said the tournament would serve as a platform to gauge the performances, especially teams from Miri, and to scout players to represent the division in other competitions.

He urged the public here to come and witness the competition, adding that more tournaments would be organised this year in their effort to promote the sport in Miri.

“We like to see as many youths especially school children from the very young age to be interested in rugby.

“Coaching is free and it is open to all schools and youngsters in Miri, the more the merrier – not merely learning Rugby skills but most importantly having fun,” said Cranfield.
