Some 500 attend Tegas roadshow on tertiary education, training

-

MIRI: Some 500 school leavers and students from five secondary schools here attended the Project of Dreams Realised Roadshow 2019 on Friday.

Organised by the Sarawak Bumiputera Technical Education Promotion Charitable Trust (Tegas), the annual roadshow involving 45 institutions and agencies sought to provide opportunities for attendees to acquire information on education training and assistance.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, who is also a Tegas board member, called on the youths and students to take full advantage of the roadshow.

“It is the hope of the Sarawak government as well to produce more digital workers to drive the government’s agenda in developing Sarawak in 2030 through a digital economy,” he said when officiating at the event.

He pointed out that the failure to choose the right course could be one of the reasons tertiary students did not complete their studies and were not competitive in the job market.

“The inability to make wise decisions will not only waste time and money, but will also result in the youths missing the opportunity of getting better jobs.

“Hence, I would like to advise SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) and STPM (Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia) leavers to ask lots of in-depth questions to counselling teachers as well as promotional staff from each institution about courses and areas you will be involved in the future,” he said.

He pointed out that in the digital era, many jobs will be simplified by automation and machinery.

“This also means many jobs that were once there will not be available anymore,” he said.

“If people do not accept these changes, the poverty and unemployment rate will not only increase, but also social problems. There is no other way except the people also need to change.”

He pointed out the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training in a digital economy.

“This means that the digital economy will bridge the socioeconomic gaps, generate business opportunities through ecommerce, create income through innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as increase job opportunities among youths,” he added.
