400 Bidayuh youths attend education fair
SERIAN: About 400 students and school leavers with Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) and Sijil Persekolahan Malaysia (SPM) attended an Education and Career Fair 2019 at a local restaurant here yesterday.
The event was organised by Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) education committee and Bidayuh Graduates Association (BGA) for the predominantly Bidayuh students from nine secondary schools within Siburan, Padawan, Penrissen and Samarahan areas.
Three speakers were invited to deliberate on topics like higher education by Dr Florence Gilliam Kayad, industrial and technical skills training by Raymond Jayim and human resource by Mary Joycelyn Dahop.
The programme was officially closed by Bidayuh community leader for Kuching Division, Temenggong Austin Dimin Niyon, who represented Assistant Minister of Transportation Datuk Dr Jerip Susil.
Dimin in his closing remark urged the students to prepare and equip themselves for the job market and stressed the importance of English.
“English is a very important language that you must all master to get jobs in the public or private sector,” he pointed out.
He also urged the youths not to get involved in social ills like drug abuse.
Also present was Sarawak Administrative Officer (SAO) from Padawan sub-district office Rangen Jamang.
Similar education fairs were held simultaneously in Serian community hall, SMK Sematan school hall and Bau Civic Centre by the respective DBNA branches to reach out to Bidayuh youths in its advisory role on education.
