MIRI: More events and activities should be added to the annual Gong Xi Bazaar here to attract more domestic and foreign visitors.

Assistant Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said that having more programmes and activities at the bazaar would create livelier and vibrant ambiance for visitors.

“Visitors to such events not only spend money but expect to have a good experience. With more lively programmes, I am sure the number of visitors would increase.

“Sarawak government recognises the bazaar’s contribution to Miri’s tourism industry and the effort of everyone involved must be taken into account,” said Lee at Gong Xi Bazaar appreciation luncheon yesterday.

He lauded the city council (MCC), Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI), agencies such as JKR, SESCO, MRC Miri District and Rela who had worked together to make the bazaar a success.

Meanwhile, chairman of MCCCI, Lee Khoi Yun who was also the co-chairman of the bazaar’s working committee expressed appreciation to the Ministry for Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Sarawak for funding and supporting the bazaar over the years.

“Gong Xi Bazaar has gone through 17 years and though there are different challenges each year, the satisfaction of seeing all ethnicities gathered together is worth everything.

“This year’s bazaar had been broadcast in TV2 Mandarin news and visitors had shared memories in social media to support the bazaar.

“The recognition from Sarawak government spurs us to hold an even better bazaar next year,” said Khoi Yun.
