Women urged to fight for better representation in politics

-

SIBU: Women should be more involved in politics to fight for gender equality and better social protection system.

National president of Women Presidents Organisation Alice Lee made this call in her address at Sibu Businesswomen Association’s ( SBWA) 15th anniversary cum installation of its new Board of Directors for 2019- 2020 at a leading hotel here on Friday night.

“We regret that there are only a handful of women politicians who become MP or state assemblypersons.

“Women need to speak up and try to fight for a 30 per cent quota.

“Breaking this critical barrier would enable women to compete with men,” she said, adding that women should empower themselves with knowledge of new technology and help empower other women too.

Meanwhile, the new board led by Jamie Tiew took their oath before SBWA’s charter advisor Kapitan Dato Janet Lau, charter president Dato Betty Wong and past president Cr. Wong Hie Ping.

Jamie in her speech said SBWA promotes and protects the interest of businesswomen, enhances connection among members, organises corporate and governmental visits to Kuala Lumpur and China for dialogues with other women entrepreneur groups and associations as well as agencies.

SBWA would continue to organise projects and activities related to women, children and family, and continue with charity work.

“We take pride in seeing our association grow, embracing good values and achieving more than what we thought possible,” Jamie added.
