Sharifah Hasidah praises Pink Ribbon group

KUCHING: Pink Ribbon Support Group Sarawak was built by extraordinary mothers, housewives and homemakers who have gone through so much in life after surviving cancer.

Assistant Minister of Law, StateFederal Relations and Project Monitoring Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said it is not surprising to see healthy career women in non- governmental organisations being successful but Pink Ribbon is a very exceptional outfit that was founded by cancer survivors.

“With age catching up, faced with so many untold challenges of cancer treatment, everything that they have gone through but together in a small group they moved actively before becoming a big and strong team that I personally admire,” said Sharifah Hasidah.

She was speaking at the closing ceremony of ‘Self Care With Mindfulness’ jointly organised by Pink Ribbon and state Women and Family Department on Saturday.

She said Pink Ribbon is a very good example of an outfit that can be turned into inspiration and role model for the younger generations.

“Pink Ribbon is only seven years old, or in Primary One but they were able to buy a house that speaks for itself on the members’ commitment and wisdom, and the never-say die spirit among the members despite facing so much difficulties in life,” she explained.

Sharifah Hasidah was very proud that Pink Ribbon never gave up despite facing so many challenges and they regularly sought her advice when facing difficulties.

“They always called me seeking advice when facing problem. They sort it out themselves. I just facilitate, and my door is always open for them,” she said.

She praised Pink Ribbon for carrying out outreach programmes to create awareness of breast cancer in villages and deep in the interior areas.

“Thank you for teaching our ladies in the rural areas on how to check their breast, and many other activities that they have carried out,” she said.

Sharifah Hasidah took the opportunity to thank CMS Property Sdn Bhd for giving Pink Ribbon special price when the support group purchased a house recently that had been transformed as their operation centre.

“Thank you CMS and now we have a centre for us to carry out our activities such as counselling, sewing class and many other activities in Samariang, and it will be open officially by this year,” she added.

She said the Pink Ribbon centre would be open to both members and non-members who need the group’s guidance or support, especially those fighting cancer.

The seminar was attended by 53 participants, with Siti Norazilah Mohd Said from Faculty of Cognitive Science and Human Development of Unimas giving a talk on Selfcare with Mindfulness and Nurazhana Ahmad from Psychology Counselling Unit of Sarawak General Hospital giving counselling technique.

State Women and Family Department director Noriah Ahmad and Pink Ribbon president Suriani Rapaiee also spoke at the function.
