Kunchi heads Women’s Association of Kapit Division
KAPIT: Kunchi Bantin is Women’s Association of Kapit Division (PWK) new president, taking over from Penghulu Wong Kie Ing who had helmed for the past 15 years.
The 6th installation of new office bearers for the 2019-2021 term was held during the association gathering recently at a restaurant here.
Political secretary to the chief minister, Nicholas Kudi Jantai, witnessed the installation and oath-taking ceremony.
Also present at the event were Kapit district officer Elvis Didit, Kapit OCPD DSP Freddy Bian, administrative officer in charge of social development Belayong Piok, Kapit District Office administrative officer Bidah Lujah, Temenggong Wilfred Billy, Pemanca Yong Thu Fook, Pemanca Steward Sawing, Penghulu Abang Bolhassan and Kapitan Yiap Yii Hoo.
Kunchi in her maiden speech said that PWK was registered with the Registrar of Societies ( RoS) on March 8, 2004 and presently has 106 registered members from various communities.
“Unlike other NGOs, PWK is open to all women regardless of their social or religious background. We organise forums, seminars and other activities in collaboration with government agencies to help women keep abreast with current socio- economic issues. Unlike yesteryears, today’s women play a pivotal role in the development of the society and the nation. Thus, it is of utmost importance that they are aware of what is happening around them”, she said.
“We really need the support of the government especially from the elected people’s representatives (YBs) to allocate funds to enable us to carry out activities for our members.
“Our immediate action plan is to reach out to women throughout Kapit Division. We plan to visit Belaga during a membership drive there. But we need financial support from the YBs,” she added.
The new committee members comprised Kapitan Yap Hui Li (deputy president), Seniah Othman (vice president), Betty Untam secretary, assisted by Wee Hui Ping. Sng Geok Yien is treasurer and assisted by Constane James Sandak.
Lau Sui Nai and Helen Sentu are in charge of children and education bureau, Tiong Kiew Leng and Betty Wong are in charge of recreation, Grace Wong Hiong Tie and Jelemi Limbang are in charge of public relations.
The ordinary members are Chieng Nguok Yien, Wong Sui Kiew, Langan Bidai and Aslinawanti Amin.
