Unimas, Icas sign MoU on cooperation, collaboration
KUCHING: A Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU) was signed between Universiti Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas) and The Institute Of Chartered Accountants Of Scotland ( Icas) with the aim of exploring areas for cooperation and collaboration such as research, academic and staff engagement.
The event was officiated by Unimas vice- chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi and Icas executive director Professor Mark Allison.
The MoU is in line with Unimas’ vision of being an exemplary university through the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research and scholarship.
Unimas and Icas intend to develop and deliver innovative partnership education models, in conjunction with authorised training firms to offer an Undergraduate in Accountancy and the CA qualification.
The main agenda of the MoU is to strengthen the existing curriculum of the Unimas accounting degree in terms of quality of content, delivery and assessment, with the ultimate goal of providing Unimas students a pathway to the Icas professional qualification.
In other words, students doing the Unimas degree would be groomed to attempt and pass the Icas examination papers. With the Icas qualification in hand, a student would only need to complete three years of relevant experience before applying to become a full member of Malaysian Institute of Accountants ( MIA).
This adds even more value to the existing Unimas accounting degree and makes it more attractive to potential students, especially those interested in pursuing the commercial programme.
Also present were Association of Malay Chartered Accountant Firm Malaysia (Amcaf) president Mohd Noh Jidin, Unimas Faculty of Economics and Business dean Associate Professor Michael Tinggi and Icas director Ann Lamb, as well as Unimas staff and other invited guests.
