Esports Team Sarawak selected

KUCHING: The selection of a team to represent Sarawak at the national level Esports tournament­s held at CityOne mall here concluded on Sunday.

Organised by the Youth and Sports Department (JBS), selected players will compete in various Esports national leagues organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia.

Sarawak JBS deputy director, Zaini Abd Aziz hoped that the state players would get to represent the country as well.

“We are grateful for the response from Sarawakian­s. It shows that Esports is indeed popular among youngsters in the state as well,” he said during the qualifiers’ prize giving ceremony.

Also present to give away the prizes were JBS’ Department of Sports Developmen­t assistant director Rafidah Abu Bakar Lim and Sarawak Esports Associatio­n president Afiq Fadhli Narawi.

The government is keen to scout and develop talents in Esports as it will feature as a medal sport for the first time in SEA Games 2019 to be held in the Philippine­s in November.

The ministry through Esports Malaysia Associatio­n ( ESM) has organised state level qualifiers across the nation to identify players to represent the country in the 2019 SEA Games.

The fi nal selection of players to represent Malaysia at the games will be done by Esports Malaysia Associatio­n ( ESM) and Ministry of Youth and Sports.

A total of five medals offered for Esports in the 2019 SEA Games are for Defense of the Ancients ( DotA) 2, Starcraft II, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang ( MLBB), Arena of Valor (AOV) and Tekken 7.

The Malaysian National Selection State Qualifiers will be held in three formats; either online or offline, or both depending on the location.

Qualifier formats will be determined by the respective state associatio­ns with the constant being in- game rulings and tournament formats to allow fair play throughout the state qualifiers.

The group stage and part of the playoff qualifiers will be played online while the Grand Finals will be played on-ground.

The selection will be divided into three sections; State Qualifiers, National Grand Finals and Bootcamp.

The format has been designed by ESM to provide the best opportunit­y for hopefuls at all levels to participat­e in the tryouts.
