SIBU: A carpenter, 33, was handed a total of 16 years’ jail and two strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to two sexual offence charges against a minor.

Amin Chandas from Ulu Woh, Kanowit, was sentenced to 10 years’ jail and two strokes of the cane for the first charge read under Section 14(e) of Sexual Offences Against Children Act, 2017.

For the second charge, he was jailed for six years for a charge under Section 15(e) of the same Act.

Sessions Court judge Caroline Bee Majanil ordered the sentences to run concurrently from the date of his arrest on April 10.

According to the facts of case, Amin committed the offences on a three-year- old girl between 9.30pm and 10.30pm on April 7 at his house in Permai Road here.

He molested the child and showed porn videos on his handphone to the victim, who is the daughter of a friend of his (Amin) wife.

The girl was brought by her mother to Amin’s house for a drink and barbecue session.

The girl’s mother only found out that her daughter had been molested after she checked her genital, and confronted the accused. She later lodged a police report. Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Arif Aizuddin Masrom, in requesting the court to impose a heavier sentence, said Amin’s act was a heinous crime on a threeyearold.

“How can an adult be taking advantage of a girl that young for his own pleasure?

“The victim is scarred for life. The court must put a stop to this by handing out very heavy sentence to deter others from doing the same,” he said.

Section 14(e) of Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 carries a maximum 20 years’ jail, and shall also be liable to whipping while Section 15(e) of the same act carries a maximum 10 years’ jail or a fine not exceeding RM 20,000 or both on conviction.
