Interestin­g activities to highlight ‘Love Earth Day Campaign’

SIBU: A tree-planting ceremony, poster- design contest and eco-handicraft DIY contest are among some of programme highlights of the two- day ‘ Love Earth Day Campaign’ to be held here, starting tomorrow (April 20).

The organising chairman Councillor Lai Chiong Ann said the aim is to create awareness among the people on the need to protect and love the environmen­t.

“Hopefully through such campaign, we will create awareness among members of the public to love our environmen­t,” he told a press conference here yesterday morning.

Lai said a total of 2,000 allamanda, crossandra, pandanus and acalypha scrubs will be planted along Jalan Tuanku Osman tomorrow, starting 10am.

Meanwhile, about 180 students will take part in the inter- school poster- design contest tomorrow at SMK Methodist.

The contest is divided into two categroeis - Category A for students from Transistio­n to Form 3 classes, and Category B for Form 4 to 6 classes.

The theme of the contest is ‘ Keep Sibu Clean and Beautiful’ for the lower form and ‘ Protect our species’ for the upper form.

The champion for the upper form will get RM300, first runner- up ( RM250), second runner- up ( RM200), There are five consolatio­ns of RM100 each while 10 potential students will receive RM50 each.

For the lower form category, the champion will get RM250, followed by RM200, RM150, RM75 and RM40.

All the participan­ts will also get a certificat­e each.

The eco-handicraft DIY contest will be held on April 21 at SJK Chung Hua.

A total of 40 pupils are expected to participat­e in two catgeories – lower primary ( Primary 1 to 3) and upper primary ( Primary 4 to 6).

The winners will also win cash prizes.

Lai said SMC Chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King will open the competitio­ns at 10.45am tomorrow.

Other programmes for the campaign include workshop and demonstrat­ion by SMK St Elizabeth students and Kemas, environmen­tral awareness talk on eco- bricks and composting, to be held at the lobby of Wisma Sanyan.

Meanwhile, the collection of ewaste and all recyclable materials will be held at the covered car park outside Wisma Sanyan.

Those who have e-waste items are encouraged to bring them to the venue for proper disposal.
