Over 100 golfers for S’wak amateur golf championsh­ips

BINTULU: The 50th Sarawak Amateur Open Golf Championsh­ip 2019 and 31st Sarawak Amateur Ladies Open Golf Championsh­ip 2019 will be held at Bintulu Golf Club ( BGC) from April 26 to 28.

BGC captain Dato Mohammad Medan Abdullah said this is Sarawak Golf Associatio­n’s (SGA) first major event of the year and the response was very encouragin­g.

A total of 140 participan­ts, including 24 women golfers from throughout Sarawak, Sabah, Peninsular Malaysia and Brunei have signed up for the event, which is offering the SGA Men and SGA Ladies trophies.

“We are looking forward to welcome all the participan­ts to this championsh­ips as it is one of the major events in SGA’s calendar,” said Medan at a press conference during a sponsorshi­p handing over ceremony at Promenade Hotel Bintulu yesterday.

“Thirty- six golfers with the lowest gross scores over the first 36 holes will qualify for the final round while 12 ladies with the lowest gross scores over the 36 holes will qualify for the final as well,” he said.

Gregory Foo from Tanah Merah Country Club, Singapore will not be defending his title as he has turned profession­al.

He won the 49th edition at Kelab Golf Sarawak in Kuching last year, defeating Casper Loh Wei Kin of Sabah Golf Associatio­n by seven strokes.

In the ladies championsh­ip, Sukma golfer Ashley Lau Jen Wen from Bintulu, who represente­d SGA last year, is unlikely to return and defend her title as she is currently studying abroad.

Eleven prizes are up for grabs in men’s gross over 54 holes and six prizes for the ladies gross category.

There will be eight prizes for the men’s nett over 36 holes and four prizes in the ladies’ nett category.

Organisers are also offering hole-in- one prizes.

Apart from a brand new Proton X70 SUV sponsored by Harbour Link Group Berhad, other prizes include Parsons Xtreme Golf set co- sponsored by GSF Golfsmart, LKT Sports Academy and Swing Dynamics, and RM5,000 cash sponsored by Bonny Mohamad Leong.

A welcoming dinner will be held at Promenade Hotel Bintulu on April 26.

The VIPs and Invited Guests categories will take place on the final day of the tournament.

Meanwhile, in a simple ceremony yesterday, Harbour Link Group Berhad director Awang Alias Timbang handed over the holeinone prize to Medan, witnessed by honorary secretary Ting Kok Tiong and other committee members.
