30 per cent of projects for Bumiputera contractors
KUCHING: The government will set aside 30 per cent of large-scale projects for Sarawak Bumiputera contractors.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said that he had met with the State Financial Secretary to draft out a tendering mechanism that would allow 30% of big development projects in the state to be presented to Bumiputera contractors.
“I also had a meeting with leaders of the Malay Contractors Association of Malaysia (PKMM), the Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( DCCI) and Chamber of Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs ( DUBS) recently
Hopefully, after the mechanism has been smoothed out, I will meet with the leaders again to get their feedback on the mechanism before finalising it. Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, Chief Minister
regarding this matter.
“Hopefully, after the mechanism has been smoothed out, I will meet with the leaders again to get their feedback on the mechanism before finalising it,” Abang Johari said when officiating at the PKMM 20th Annual General Meeting and Dinner held at the Sarawak Chambers, Riverside Majestic Hotel here on Saturday night .
Abang Johari also touched on challenges Bumiputera contractors faced, which entailed them to subcontract portions of their jobs to non- Bumiputera contractors.
“Sometimes, the Bumiputera contractors in the state have the expertise to carry out certain projects, but maybe lack the equipment and machinery to carry out the works.
“Thus, the state government is looking into ways to solve this issue, such as providing the contractors with the machinery and equipment they need by renting them out to members of PKMM Sarawak, DCCI and DUBS,” Abang Johari said.
He also announced that the state government was looking into awarding a piece of land to PKMM Sarawak to build its office here.
During the event, Abang Johari also presented the awards for the PKMM Sarawak 2019 Excellent Contractors Award.
Among the notable guests present at the event were former Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abang Muhammad Salahuddin and his wife Toh Puan Norkiah, Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, PKMM president Dato Mohamed Fadzill Hassan, PKMM Sarawak president Dato Ismail Suut and Assistant Minister of ECommerce Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais.
