Finalists of Miss Grand Malaysia savour Sarawak

MIRI: The 24 finalists of Miss Grand Malaysia had the opportunit­y to witness cooking demonstrat­ion of Sarawak’s traditiona­l dishes and sample them at Miri Handicraft Centre yesterday.

Coordinate­d by Miri City Council, ( MCC), the pageant organiser and smart partners, the event saw some finalists squirmed to eat live sago worms, a Melanau delicacy. Cooked sago worms with curry leaves and traditiona­l herbs were no easier to swallow.

Other traditiona­l dishes included sago based Ketupek Seei (Tumpik Lemantak), bubur pedas, a Malay traditiona­l dish popular during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and Mee Kolok Sarawak made famous by the Chinese community.

Councillor Karambir Singh who represente­d Miri City Mayor, Adam Yii led councillor­s from Tourism Developmen­t Standing Committee in welcoming the finalists and organisers to the handicraft centre.

The finalists joined in cultural performanc­es, batik painting organised jointly with the newly establishe­d Persatuan Pelukis dan Seni Visual Miri ( PPSVM).

Karambir said the council is honoured that the organisers had chosen Miri for the final of the beauty pageant.

“Miri Handicraft Centre with its new arts gallery is chosen to showcase niche products of Miri. Hopefully, they would help promote Miri,” said Karambir when met during the function.

Also present were chairman for MCC’s Tourism Developmen­t Committee, councillor Warziedea Ahmad and other councillor­s, Miss Grand Malaysia national director Jude Benjamin and production manager Brandan Yeo, PPSVM deputy president and exco members.

The finalists will also visit Niah National Park, Tusan Beach, Piasau Nature Reserve and Crocodile Farm Miri.

Clara Sosa, Miss Grand Internatio­nal 2018 from Paraguay will crown the new Miss Grand Malaysia with Miss Grand Malaysia 2018 Debra Jeanne Poh this Sunday (April 28) at Meritz Hotel.

The winner of the coveted title will represent Malaysia at the annual Miss Grand Internatio­nal in Venezuela in October.

Miss Grand Malaysia 2019 is supported by Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Sarawak, Sarawak Tourism Board and Miri City Council.

Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Developmen­t Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah will be the guest- of-honour.
