Unresolved drainage problem leads to flash flood at Taman Nyabau Height — Chiew

-

BINTULU: Tanjong Batu assemblyman Chiew Chin Sing takes to task Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government for its indifference to drainage problem at Taman Nyabau Height in Mile 6 Jalan Tun Hussein Onn which flooded yet again on Friday.

Flood water flowed into the houses early Friday morning after a few hours of heavy rain. It was about one foot deep at the garage of some houses. One could imagine how much water had gone into the living room, kitchen and the bathroom, he said yesterday.

“Fearing that the water level might go up even higher, residents moved their furniture and other valuables including their cars to higher ground. The residents had a sleepless night,” he said.

After severe flooding in February, the residents of Taman Nyabau Height met with several government agencies to seek their help.

“I myself visited them to see what we could do. I even wrote to the general manager of Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) Rodziah Morshidi asking for her plans to stop the flooding and specific dates for works.”

Regretfully until today, Chiew said, nothing had been done not even a contingency plan while waiting for a master plan.

“Put yourself in their (residents) shoes, how would you feel? Isn’t there anyone in-charge anymore?

“It is alright for me that the general manager did not reply my letter as such attitude of the old Barisan Nasional government is carried forward by the GPS government.

“But we cannot ignore the problems and pretend there is nothing to see and nothing to hear,” said Chiew, who is also DAP Bintulu branch chairman.
