Gymkhana Club Miri swimmers bag 19 gold at Brunei age-group meet

KUCHING: Swimmers from Gymkhana Club Miri continued to shine in local and internatio­nal swimming competitio­ns and in their latest successful outing to the 27th Brunei Age Group Swimming Championsh­ip from April 19 to 21, they brought back 19 gold, 22 silver and 11 bronze medals.

The 11-member GCM team comprising 10 boys and one girl was placed overall fourth behind the champions Peak Performanc­e Swim Club who captured a whopping 61 gold, 51 silver and 39 bronze medals in the three-day meet.

Brunei Speed Swimming Club were second with 23 gold, 10 silver and 10 bronze medals while Hammerhead Swimming Club came in third with 19 gold, 40 silver and 31 bronze medals.

“The swimmers have done very well in this championsh­ip. We also won two best boy swimmer awards through Nigel Tay Yu Yi (16-18 years old) and Deven Max Carroll (10-11 years old).

“It was also a very good exposure for our young swimmers,” said head coach David Chung.

Deven, 11, was the team’s star performer when he bagged seven gold and six silver medals.

The gold medals were won in the 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 200m individual medley, 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 200m butterfly while the silver medals were in the 200m backstroke, 50m breaststro­ke, 400m freestyle, 200m breaststro­ke, 100m breaststro­ke and 50m backstroke.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Nigel Tay was the gold medalist in the 400m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 400m individual medley, 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle.

His two silver medals came from the 200m backstroke and 200m individual medley.

Others who also impressed during the meet were 10-year-old Seau Zhi Ping with four gold, five silver and three bronze; 10-yearold Claire Lau Yu Rong with two gold, five silver and three bronze; nine-year-old Aidan Bong Rui Jie with one gold, two silver and one bronze; and Ryan Liaw Chee Heng with two silver and four bronze medals.

The team manager was Donna Caroll.

Other teams in the championsh­ip were Kelab Renang Pujut Miri, Miri Amateur Swimming Associatio­n, Jerudong Swimming Club, Aqua Flippers Philippine­s, Indonesia Swimming Team, Dolphin Swimming Club and Skim Latihan Renang Tutong.
