KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah is calling on Sarawakians to be vigilant against those with extreme racial or religious views living in their midst.

According to him, such people will only destroy the state’s racial and religious harmony currently being enjoyed by everyone.

“People with extreme racial or religious outlooks will always try to poison our minds, pitting us against each other.

“We must preserve the existing racial and religious harmony and unity that we have enjoyed at all cost, because we have been living harmoniously with each other for so long,” he said during a fundraising dinner hosted by Christ Baptist Church Kuching,

Uggah, who is also Unit for Other Religions ( Unifor) chairman, said he was grateful that Sarawak has so far been spared from such destructive mindset, and stressed the need to strengthen solidarity among the people.

He also praised Christ Baptist Church Kuching for doing its part to contribute to the community by conducting kindergarten classes for members’ children.

“You are doing a very noble job in preparing the young children to have better education. It is with better education that one can have better quality of life,” he said.

He suggested the church expand its role by helping members go into income-generating economic activities, and announced a grant of RM30,000 for the dinner’s fundraising drive and another RM400,000 for the church and its kindergarten extension fund.

Also present at the dinner were Kanowit MP Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, dinner organising chairman Jimbai Majang, Christ Baptist Church Kuching senior pastor Greman Ujang Slat and other officials.
