UPSR Excellent Achievement Award to be annual event in Mambong area, says MP

-

KUCHING: The Ujian Persekolahan Sekolah Rendah ( UPSR) Excellent Achievement Award for primary schools in Mambong area, which was introduced this year, would become an annual event, said Puncak Borneo MP Willie Mongin here recently.

“I see this event (UPSR Excellent Achievement Award) as a very important platform and a good beginning to motivate our schoolchildren to perform well in their academic field, so for this reason I will give strong support for this event to be held annually,” he said when officiating at the event that took place at St Paul Parish Hall in Kampung Bunuk, Jalan Borneo Heights near here yesterday, organised by Mambong Area Education Development Committee and Mambong Area Headmasters Council ( MAHC).

Willie stressed that there was no better way to prepare the younger generation to face the future like seeking employment and becoming leaders, than through education.

The event also acknowledged the role and responsibility of the teachers in their duties to enable 100 per cent passing rate for pupils in their respective teaching subjects.

Some 202 UPSR pupils last year received the award, while 47 teachers received their certificates for achieving 100-per cent pass in their respective subjects like English, Bahasa Melayu and Science.

Willie also hoped that the schools in Puncak Borneo would conduct UPSR workshop at least one month before the start of the examination to help prepare the pupils.

He assured those present that he would look for funds to hold such workshop for the benefit of the UPSR pupils.

Willie further pointed out the need for outstanding schoolchildren to be consistent in their academic performance, to enable them to continue their studies up to the tertiary level.

He also said there was no reason for parents to not send their children to school, including poverty.

He then urged community leaders and teachers to work together in identifying poor families who could not afford to send their children to school, and submit the names to his service centre for assistance.

“The community leaders and teachers can also work together to fight social ills among the school- children,” he said, adding that there ought to be a balanced development in both academic and spiritual needs.

MAHC chairman Josep Henry Nessem, who is also SK St Gregory Giam headmaster, was among those present at the event.
