-

SIBU: The RM1-million flash flood mitigation project near here would take about six months to reach completion.

According to Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairperson Rogayah Jamain, the project area covers Langsat Road up to Hua Kiew Road.

“The flash flood mitigation ( project) kicked off last month, and completion date is expected around September this year,” she told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday.

On the other project slated for Pedada Road here, Rogayah said it primarily involved upgrading works on the roadside drain, which would be covered for it to become a walking path.

She said the works for this project, also costing around RM1 million, commenced in September last year, and should reach completion this September.

On a separate matter, Rogayah said the response to the parking coupon redemption programme, which was carried out on April 20 and 21 in conjunction with Love Earth Day 2019, had been very encouraging.

Throughout the two days, members of the public brought 500g of recyclable items that comprised old newspapers, books and magazines, aluminium cans and plastic bottles, to be exchanged for 40-sen parking coupons.

“The response was especially good on the second day (April 21) where there’s one big lorry full with recyclable items meant to be sent to the collector, Tung Seng,” she said.

Meanwhile, SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King assured local folk that the coupon redemption programme would be turned into a long-term project.

He said this ‘green initiative’ was meant to encourage more people to take up recycling and in turn, make this town ‘greener’.
