SFC supports programmes promoting biodiversi­ty

KUCHING: As custodians of Totally Protected Areas ( TPAs), Sarawak Forestry Corporatio­n (SFC) supports programmes and activities promoting biodiversi­ty education and awareness.

Its chief executive officer Zolkifli Mohamad Aton said activities that bring attention to biodiversi­ty conservati­on in the state play an important role in conservati­on efforts and ecotourism drive.

“We rely on our iconic species to attract and bring eco-tourism into the state,” he said at the closing ceremony of 8th Internatio­nal Bornean Frog Race 2019 held at Sarawak Islamic Informatio­n Centre here yesterday.

These include Orang Utan at Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, proboscis monkey at Bako National Park and Oriental-pied hornbill at Piasau Nature Reserve.

Zolkifli shared that there are 104 frog species documented in the TPA of western Sarawak at Kubah National Park, Bako National Park, Fairy Cave Nature Reserve and other sites.

Zulkifli thanked Universiti Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas), Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Sarawak, Ministry of Urban Developmen­t and Natural Resources, Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, Sarawak Timber Associatio­n, Sarawak Tourism Board, Shell, Sarawak Timber Industry Developmen­t Corporatio­n, Harwood Timber Sdn Bhd and Dasanrama Sdn Bhd for supporting the event.

He also thanked Dr Jodi Rowley of the Australian Natural History Museum and Professor Dr Ibrahim Jaafar from Universiti Sains Malaysia for their involvemen­t in the two- day event.

Participan­ts and organisers criss- crossed four different sites namely Samajaya Nature Reserve, Kubah National Park, Matang Widlife Centre and Unimas campus in this annual race to promote awareness and education on amphibians and amphibians conservati­on around the world with special attention to Bornean frogs.
