SIBU: Collaboration between National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health ( Niosh) and the institutions of higher learning would promote and help make health and occupational safety (OSH) practices a culture in the community.

Niosh chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye stated this in a media release in conjunction with International Occupational Safety Half Marathon ( IOS Half Marathon) held at Universiti Teknologi Mara ( UiTM) Shah Alam yesterday.

“It is in line with the theme of World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2019 - A Safe and Healthy Future of Work, where we need to focus on improving safety and health for young workers,” he said.

The marathon was organised by UiTM Faculty of Chemical Engineering in collaboration with Niosh in conjunction with World Day for Safety and Health at Work, better known as “World OSH Day”.

Also present were UiTM deputy vice- chancellor ( Development) associate Professor Dr Mohd Fozi Ali, dean of Faculty of Chemical Engineering Professor Dr Norazah Abd Rahman and NIOSH Executive Secretary Mej ( Rtd) Hanif Maidin.

The run comprised 21KM, 10KM and 5KM. Participants earn 5 points under Continuing Education Programme ( CEP) from Department of Occupational Safety and Health.

Sixteen international participants from Japan, China, Albania and France also joined the run.

Lee added that International Labour Organisation ( ILO) is committed to safe working environment for all employees by 2030 and end all forms of child labour by 2025.

“According to ILO, some 541 million young workers aged between 15 and 24 years account for more than 15 per cent of the world’s labour force and suffer up to a 40 per cent higher rate of nonfatal occupational injuries than adult workers,” he stressed.
