Charity golf tournament raises over RM1 mln for rural kids education

KUCHING: Charity Golf for Rural Kids Education tournament raised RM1,080,000 when it concluded yesterday.

According to the event organising chairman Dato Wee Yiaw Hin, the tournament held to raise funds for educationa­l needs of children from needy families in rural Sarawak saw a total of 90 golfers tee off at Sarawak Golf Club ( KGS).

“The full sum of the donation will be channeled to student beneficiar­ies through their smartcards and will be managed by MyKasih Foundation, a charity organisati­on that pioneered innovative cashless aid distributi­on,” he said during the closing ceremony at KGS clubhouse.

Certificat­es were also given to donors who contribute­d to the event’s fund-raising during the closing ceremony.

This year’s tournament was organised by volunteers in collaborat­ion with KGS, MyKasih Foundation and Sarawak Energy. KGS supported by having the tournament at its club, Sarawak Energy managed the tournament directorat­e while MyKasih will manage the fund.

A group of volunteers led by Datuk Richard Lee initiated the tournament to help rural children badly affected by flooding in 2017 with proceeds collected benefittin­g 1,041 students from 16 primary schools then.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah is the patron of this charity tournament.

Present during the closing ceremony was Piasau assemblyma­n Datuk Sebastian Ting, Sarawak Energy executive vice president for strategy and corporate developmen­t cum tournament director Ting Ching Zung and other organising committee members.
