Punjabis celebrate Mother’s Day with lunch for 13 mothers
MIRI: Its Mother’s Day today (May 12), a celebration honouring mothers, motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.
It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, mostly in March or May to complement similar celebrations honouring other family members – fathers, siblings, and grandparents
Here, various organisations including churches, families and groups celebrate the day by having special lunches, dinners, seminars and special church services. Presents in various forms normally accompanied with flowers are also given to mothers.
The Punjabis here, though a minority, also observed Mother’s Day yesterday – hosting a luncheon for 13 mothers aged 60 and above at one of the Indian restaurants in the city.
Coordinated by Parveen Kaur the wife of Miri Indian Association president Karambir Singh and Dr Manju Inder an officer at a specialist clinic here, the celebration included games, presentation of gifts, cake-cutting, and awarding Mother of the Day title to Harnaik Kaur, 79, a retired kindergarten teacher.
“Being mother is one of the best things in my life, blessed with two sons and one daughter Gurmit, Jagpal and Premjit respectively – all successful in their respective careers.
“The celebration reminds me of the important role of being mother and parent. We should not pamper our children but strict with them so that they learn what is good for their future,” said Harnaik when met yesterday.
Parveen who also has three girls Ashveen Tanman and Japji, said Motherhood though a challenge, is an honourable and rewarding thing.
“Seeing my children growing is wonderful and today myself and Dr Manju organised this celebration in appreciation of mothers including ourselves besides strengthening the bond among us”.
