KGBS against proposal for English language option teachers sit for Muet
Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union ( KGBS) rejects the proposal by the Education Ministry to require English language option teachers who are still serving to sit for the Malaysian University English Test (Muet).
KGBS views the proposal as unrealistic as it will give rise to various perceptions, its president Ahmad Malie pointed out.
“For example, who will bear the payment to sit for such test? Based on past experience, if we intend to sit for a certain test, obviously it is necessary to pay for the fee.
“Next comes the question of what will be the impact on those who did not achieve the level required a er si ing for the test concerned.
“Therefore, KGBS asserts that all these ma ers need to be answered by the Education Ministry before enforcing the implementation of Muet on English language option teachers who are still in service,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Ahmad opined that further discussion ought to be held with stakeholders, in particular, teachers unions before implementing such proposal.
It was recently reported that the Education Ministry’s instruction that teachers teaching English language sit for MUET only applied to English language option teachers.
Education Ministry deputy director-general (policy and development) Dr Habibah Abdul Rahim reportedly said the move was to ensure all teachers of this subject achieve the highest level of proficiency.
Ahmad, however, assured that KGBS will agree to it if the ministry enforces the implementation of Muet on prospective teachers currently undergoing teacher training.
“In fact, such measure is appropriate and has become the entry qualification to any institute of higher learning in the country before this,” he noted.
Ahmad said: “Therefore, with regard to this issue, KGBS urges the Education Ministry to hold further discussion with stakeholders, in particular, teachers unions before this proposal is implemented.”
