Pujut rep pledges to do more for SMK Lutong

MIRI: Good things should be coming to SMK Lutong here soon, following a pledge by Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon to continue bringing in improvements to the school and accommodating the needs of the teachers and students there.

According to him, the enhancements would also cover the dormitory, which currently houses some 130 students.

“I am very impressed by what I have seen at the school dormitory today, as it provides a very good study environment.

“The only thing that they are asking is a clothes-drying area – usually during rainy days, the students could not leave their washed clothes out to dry. So, they’re asking for the construction of a covered clothes-drying area, and I’ve told the principal that we would help and support them to build it,” he told reporters when met after officiating at the opening ceremony for ‘Karnival Lugoss and Hostel Open Day 2019’ at SMK Lutong yesterday.

Adding on, Dr Ting said he was very impressed with the level of cleanliness at the dormitory block, which signified the high level of discipline and good behaviour of the boarders.

“The school has also set up a garden near the dormitory where they can plant vegetables and in the process, earn some incomes. To me, this is very impressive. This is how a good school and a good teaching staff should be – to empower their students and also to be more creative,” he said.

Later, Dr Ting contributed RM2,000 to the school.

On plans to build the clothesdrying area, Dr Ting was unable to come up with cost estimates.

“I have actually run out of government funding, so I just give them a little bit first – should they want a bigger one, then we would do it next year once we have more funding,” he said.

“I think RM2,000 is not enough, but according to the principal, it is,” the assemblyman quipped.

SMK Lutong is touted as among the largest schools in Miri, with a student population of over 2,300 – all coming from multi-ethnic and multi-religious backgrounds.
