SIBU: Youths working outside of Sibu are urged to return to their hometown to contribute to the growth of Sibu.

Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said Sibu, which has the third highest population in Sarawak, has great potential for development.

As an example, he suggested that aspiring youth entrepreneurs who are interested to start their own business to take up related training courses and fully utilise their creativity and work hard to start a career in Sibu.

“As long as young people master the appropriate marketing methods, they can even re-create our specialty products such as through vegetables, pepper, light cakes and so on. This (starting of business) would then inject vitality into the community and stimulate the local economy,” he said in his speech read Sibu General Chinese Chamber of Commerce and industry (SGCCCI) president Datuk Lau Cheng Kiong at the opening ceremony of the 1st Borneo Startup Festival at Methodist Pilley Institute (MPI) here yesterday.

Tiong pointed out that as times have changed, industries such as farming, animal husbandry and handicraft have received much attention in recent year.

“Therefore, it is not difficult for those in these industries to earn more than salaried employees as long as they have the relevant knowledge and can become a leader in the specific field.”

He also expressed his hope that festival exhibitors will use the event as a platform to actively introduce their business concept to attendees.

Organised by SGCCCI Youth Entrepreneur Committee in collaboration with MPI, the inaugural festival featured 110 exhibition booths where young entrepreneurs were able to promote their line of products.
