KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is collaborating with Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) in running a photography competition, themed ‘ Kuching in Your Eyes 2.0: Sungai Tabuan Edition’.

According to Councillor Kho Teck Wan, the co-organisers are inviting all photography enthusiasts to take part in the contest, which focuses on the lifestyles, traditions and culture of the communities in Kampung Sungai Tabuan and Kampung Sungai Apong here.

“This contest also promotes river health and tourism.

“We hope that through this event, this area will become another attraction for those (tourists) wanting to see the mangrove trees,” she said prior to the soft launch of the competition at Sungai Tabuan here yesterday.

Kho also stressed on the importance of enhancing awareness of river cleanliness and in this regard, she commended the SRB for having set up many rubbish traps to collect the floating debris in Sungai Tabuan.

Meanwhile, SRB Southern Region Kuching assistant port manager Mohammad Fadzli Noh expressed his hope that the board’s collaboration with MBKS will highlight the real situation of Sungai Tabuan, which was once infamous for having massive amount of floating debris.

“Sometimes people want to dispose of their rubbish but do not know the proper way of doing so.

“This is the mindset of certain quarters within the community – to change such mindset is not easy,” he said, pointing out that some of the rubbish known to have been thrown into the rivers here included mattresses, sofa sets and even refrigerators.

According to SRB River Cleanliness and Conservation Unit senior inspector Daub Ahmad, in Sungai Sarawak alone, over 400 metric tonnes of rubbish is being fished out every month.
