CIM Sarawak to hold 74 courses to help target groups

-

MIRI: Cooperative Institute of Malaysia (CIM) Sarawak will hold a total of 74 entrepreneurialrelated courses this year in line with the National Entrepreneurship Policy (NEP) to turn Malaysia into a true entrepreneurial nation by 2030.

CIM Sarawak zone director Siti Maimunah Jerni said unlike past years, the institute will not be targeting the number of participants, but focus on helping the target groups such as the B40, single mothers, the less fortunate and cooperatives.

“Last year we held 59 courses benefitting some 5,000 people in the state. This year our focus is in line with NEP to create a holistic and conducive entrepreneurial ecosystem to support an inclusive, balanced and sustainable economic development agenda.

“For example our fifth thrust this year is to rejuvenate dormant cooperatives to be catalysts in generating income for the members, active agents for human capital and become social enterprises to help local communities,” she said when met at ‘Program Jom Turun Padang

Ke Arah Kemakmuran Bersama’ by CIM Sarawak, here yesterday.

According to her, there are currently 1,080 registered cooperatives in Sarawak but only 600 are active.

The courses to rejuvenate the cooperatives would incorporate new technology, Internet of Things (IoT) and new focus of entrepreneurship.

“Our ultimate goal is to reach out to the target groups to increase the number of qualified, viable, resilient entrepreneurs and enhance the capabilities of local entrepreneurs, as well as small and medium industries,” she said.

As such, she urged parents to reject the mentality that their children need to find jobs in the private or public sector, but instead venture into business which if done systematically can bring in lucrative income.

She added that CIM also provides programmes such as MiRiCLe Programme to assist cooperatives in enhancing business performance to the tune of millions of ringgit; Cooperative Entrepreneurship, IR4.0 Mind Transformation, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) and Social Entrepreneur (SE).

On the roadshow, Siti Maimumah said it was the second in the series for the northern region of Bintulu, Miri and Limbang with 327 attendees, after one in Sibu on Jan 14.

A similar programme will be held in Kuching on Jan 30.
