Churches take precautionary measures against Covid-19

-

SIBU: Catholic churches here have been adhering to pastoral and health recommendations as precautionary measures to contain the spread of the highly contagious Covid-19 since late January.

Persons displaying flu-like symptoms are exempted from Sunday obligation but are encouraged to read the Sunday liturgy of the word at home.

Other practical precautionary measures taken during masses include bowing instead of shaking hands during sign of peace; using tissues to cover nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing and disposing used tissue properly instead of leaving them on the pews; practising good hygiene with frequent washing of hands; avoiding close contact with those with flu-like symptoms and no Holy Water is used at the church fonts for the time being.

One parishioner who requested anonymity was visibly upset that Holy Water is no longer provided in fonts at the church’s entrances.

“Holy Water is one of the most important elements for the Catholic Church.

It is used for sacramental purposes, exorcism and blessings,” he said when asked for comments on the precautionary measures taken by the church.

However, another Catholic parishioner thought the precautionary measures taken by the churches here are good reminders to practise basic good hygiene and be considerate of others when gathering in church.

“All the more so now, we have to practise what we believe and not contribute to fear and confusion,” she added.
