SIBU: The Hii Kah Tung Foundation board of trustees has selected 17 school leavers to receive this year’s scholarships.

At a press conference yesterday, secretary Hii Yik Ping said the board received 31 new applications this year.

“Today (yesterday), we have selected 17 students. We selected them based on their exam results and family background,” he said.

He explained that the scholarships are given out annually.

“Students regardless whether they study abroad or locally will receive RM4,000 every year. But every year, there is an assessment whereby they need to submit their results to us for us to assess whether they can still receive the scholarship the next year,” he said.

The foundation started in 1982 and as of last year, 794 students had benefited from the scholarship.

“As at 2019, we have already given out a total of RM9,829,400 in scholarships to these students. In addition to this, we also donated about RM5.45 million to charity,” he said.

Among those present at the press conference were board members Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming, Ting Sik Kang, and Hii Ching Chiong.
