Ensuring SOP compliance important but teachers’ priority to teach — STU

-

SIBU: Teachers should be allowed to focus on teaching and have sufficient time to deliver their lessons once schools reopen to students at all levels, says Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) president Macky Joseph.

He said while teachers are tasked with ensuring the standard operating procedures (SOP) are adhered to, it should not come at a cost of time being taken away from them to carry out face-to-face teaching.

“While safety is of paramount importance, STU would like to stress that the burden of teachers should be lessened as they welcome pupils back to school soon to resume their learning process.

“A teacher’s priority is to teach. Sufficient allocation of time for face-to-face teaching should not be taken away from the teachers,” he said when commenting yesterday on the announcement by Education Minister Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin on the resumption of classes.

Mohd Radzi on Wednesday said students in Form 1 to Form 4 and Remove Class, as well as pupils in Primary 5 and Primary 6 would return to school starting July 15, while Primary 1 to Primary 4 pupils would return on July 22.

Meanwhile, Macky repeated his call for all parties to adhere strictly to the standard operating procedures (SOP) outlined by the authorities concerned, be it within the school compound or outside the school.

“STU once again urges everyone to maintain self-discipline and observe the SOP to combat the spread of Covid-19.

“Parents or guardians need to make sure their children are healthy before going to school and children should stay at home and seek medical consultation if feeling unwell,” he said.
